Star of Texas Tattoo Art Revival

Posted by: Austin Speed Shop on 01/5/2010

Happy New Year!  2010 is upon us and another year of car-shows begins.  This year we’re kicking off the season right down the street at the Palmer Events Center for the Star of Texas Tattoo Art Revival.  Definitely not a car show, but certainly a great time.  Our good friend Marcy puts on this tattoo and art show every year and always is sure to include a few custom cars.  The art is great, the cars are slick, and the people watching is world-class.  See you there?

Sneak Peek: 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan

Posted by: Austin Speed Shop on 12/9/2009

When’s the last time you saw a custom Lincoln Cosmopolitan?  No, this is not the baby Lincoln that is the size of a full size Mercury, this is the big boy.  This was Lincoln’s premier luxury car of the day.

Matt Cameron, drummer for Pearl Jam, decided that he wanted something special to cruise the mean streets of the North West.  Something that was comfortable, fun to drive, and reliable enough to drive everyday with some race car styling.  We’ve been working hard to deliver just that.  We’re in the home stretch, full coverage soon to come.  For now, enjoy these progress pics……

R.I.P. Francis Reissig

Posted by: Austin Speed Shop on 12/8/2009

Francis Reissig passed away Friday morning December 4th, 2009 at 6:50 am.  He was 94 years old.  Mr. Reissig meant a lot to us at the Austin Speed Shop, more than he’ll ever know.  I think about him literally every day.  We didn’t know him very well directly, but did have the honor of meeting him a few times, and we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know one of his son’s Skip very well.  Here is a brief segment of Mr. Reissig’s history and how it became intertwined with the Austin Speed Shop:

Just after WW2 Mr. Reissig started an Automotive repair shop in Austin, Texas on South Lamar Blvd. in 1946 called South Lamar Automotive.  They performed all types of automotive repair and service.  In 1949 he purchased a brand new Chevrolet pickup truck down the street from the Austin Chevrolet dealership.  This would be the truck that he’d court his wife to be in, the truck that his children would learn to drive in, the truck that would pickup parts and push cars around at his buisness until 2006, and the truck that became something that will stay in the Reissig family for generations to come.

In 1959, Mr. Reissig decided it was time to buy a larger piece of land and expand his shop.  He moved 2 blocks down the road to 1414 & 1416 S. Lamar Blvd.  Mr. Reissig built his new shop with his own hands. His initials are still engraved in the concrete from when the foundation was poured. He and his family operated South Lamar Automotive in that location until 2006 when the decision was made to sell the property.  Austin Speed Shop was renting a building on their property.  Seeking more space and a longer term place to call home, Austin Speed Shop moved into the South Lamar Automotive building.

Just after getting settled, Skip Reissig mentioned that he’d like Austin Speed Shop to restore and hot rod his fathers 1949 Chevrolet Pickup just how they’d always wanted to do in the SAME building that truck has been with since 1949.  We’ve been HONORED to be a part of such an important project and are thankful to Skip for the opportunity.

Every morning when I stand at the front of the building and wait while the bay door is opening I look down and see Mr. Reissig’s initials carved into the floor.  It reminds me that someone has been standing in that very entrance doing the same thing we’re doing every single day since 1959.

The Houston Autorama, a Thanksgiving Tradition.

Posted by: Austin Speed Shop on 11/24/2009

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Houston Autorama. It begins the afternoon of Thanksgiving day at the Houston Convention Center and goes through the end of the weekend.  It may seem strange to some to have a car show on Thanksgiving day, but in Houston, if you have motor oil in your blood, you’ll be at the Autorama; it’s what Houstonites have been doing for 50 years.  Austin Speed Shop is proud to join the tradition.  We’ll be there all weekend, so please stop by and say Hello!  We’re bringing the ‘36 Ford “barn-find” Cabriolet, Skip’s ‘49 Chevy truck, and of course Billy Powell’s ‘36 Ford 3-window coupe.

Billy Powell’s 36 Ford

Posted by: Austin Speed Shop on 11/18/2009

Billy Powell of Houston, TX sold his gorgeous 54 Chevy magazine cover car with the determination to find a new project that would be a solid platform for a traditionally styled early to mid 50’s era custom.  He did just that.  Billy delivered to Austin Speed Shop one of the cleanest bodied 1936 Ford 3 window coupes that we’ve ever seen.  Even though it’s already a nice car, to Billy, nice isn’t good enough.  Over the next year, we will help Billy take this car to the next level.  Phase One will include lowering it, perfecting the stance, and giving the interior some help.  Future plans include upholstery work, a mild chop, different bumpers, a fresh set of wheels, tires, and hubcaps, and more.   We’ll keep you posted with progress.  Come check it out Thanksgiving weekend at the Houston Autorama where it will be on display with phase one completed.
